British Columbia, Canada (AHN) - British Columbia Finance Minister Carole Taylor filed with the provincial parliament Monday the Carbon Tax Act 2008. The measure seeks to cut the province's greenhouse gases by 33 percent by 2020.

At the same time it seeks to raise funds for British Columbia through the collection of a carbon tax of 2.5 cents per liter for gasoline and 2.75 cents per liter for diesel starting July 1. By 2012 the carbon tax is scheduled to rise to about 7.25 cents per liter.

The only thing more pathetic than Pelosi in her current position and office is if Cindy Sheehan were to take it over, she's gunning for it you know.  Now the infamous cuckolder is at it again.  From the Politico;

Democrats will meet throughout the week to hash out their strategy, and they insist that Pelosi and other Democratic leaders have not yet made any final decisions about how to handle what’s likely to be the last Iraq funding debate of the Bush presidency. Call me politically naive but I really can't figure out what Pelosi is trying to accomplish with this move.  She is notorious for cuckolding her fellow socialist and any republican who let's her, so maybe this is just her being true to who she is?  A maniacal practitioner of sadomasochism just looking to dole out punishment and hike her leg on as many trees as possible?  And what's with all the extra loot?  Is her district running low on size 14 high heels and KY Jelly?

COMPLETE, UTTER NONSENSE

The ACLU says that blacks convicted of capital crimes against whites are more likely to be sentenced to death than if they had committed capital crimes against other minorities.  Read that again, go ahead, I'll wait...

Today Chris Hill, State Strategies Coordinator for our Capital Punishment Project, blogged in DailyKos about the ongoing racial disparities in death penalty sentences in the U.S., and especially when it comes to punishing certain crimes. He writes:

The 2003 Amnesty study found racial bias in the death penalty systems of North Carolina, South Carolina, Maryland, Texas, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio and New Jersey. The problem cited by Amnesty in most of those states was that defendants were more likely to be sentenced to death if their victim was white and that the racial configuration most likely to receive capital punishment is black defendants convicted of killing white victims.
Similar studies have shown the existence of the same racial bias in the death penalty systems of California, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Maryland and North Carolina. An American Sociological Review article from 2007 showed that minorities capitally sentenced for killing white people were more likely to have their sentences carried out than minorities who kill non-whites. One of the authors of the study said, "[w]hite lives are still valued more than black ones when it comes to deciding who gets executed and who does not." (emphasis mine)

So, by this logic, we should only be allowed to convict, and sentence to death, the worst of society, on a one for one exchange basis?  Kill a black you now must kill a white?  Then to be fair, let's kill a Latino and an Asian too!  We have to be fair, right?  I'm sure there's a few in prison who got life instead of the death penalty.

Did my tax money go to fund this waste of time?  Does this logic suggest the need for more cases of whites killing blacks be prosecuted just to even things out?

It's a common known fact that more violent crime is committed by blacks and other 'minorities' regardless of who the victim's are, even though they are a fraction of the population.  If they are sentenced to death more often if there if victims were white than black, so what!  The crime is the same and the end result is moot. 

Would it make everyone happier if more whites killed more blacks, to bring the numbers up to comparable levels, and then were sentenced to death more often than for killing other whites?  Your logic is complete, utter nonsense.

IS HAMAS' 10 YEAR TRUCE OFFER ANOTHER ROTTEN CARROT?

 

An article from Rami G. Khouri in the Daily Star (Lebanon) would like us all to keep an open mind when considering a 10 year truce offered by Hamas recently. 

A series of related moves is critical now: correctly reading the meaning of Hamas' truce offer; third-party mediation working quietly but quickly behind the scenes to achieve a truce of at least two years; activating immediately a significant economic development plan that prods both public opinion majorities to choose negotiations over militarism; promoting other confidence-building measures (prisoner exchanges, easier movement of people and goods, wider Arab-Israeli links) to expand the truce benefits to touch all sectors of society; and, using the Arab peace plan as an opening to move swiftly into final-status negotiations that can transform a short-term truce into a permanent peace agreement.

An end to mutual attacks, improved daily living conditions, and new hope for future generations would quickly push public opinion in Israel and Palestine to demand more, logically leading to a permanent peace agreement. Impossible? Not at all. Just go to Northern Ireland and see how peace and power-sharing were achieved, starting with a truce offer that was also widely dismissed at the time. Good things happen when people bury their hysteria pills along with their sectarian guns.

Well, considering who we are dealing with, these guys don't have the best track record when it comes to keeping their word, especially, when it comes to Israel.  I personally see no reason to believe anything that oozes from their mouths, but Khouri does put forward some very reasonable thoughts regarding Hamas' most recent offer of peace.  And if the offer is sincere it would be a very welcome truce indeed.

Too bad we are not dealing with reasonable people in Hamas.
